At the start of the year, I went to do my weekly food shop, and my eye caught sight of a stunning front cover of a book. With a silver sword and purple flowers floating around the cover, the title ‘Powerless’ somehow got my attention.

 For many people, they pick up a book and add it to their bookshelf, meaning they get back to it later. I decided to start it that night, but I wasn’t able to put it down. I read the entire book in one sitting and was up all night visualizing the story in my head.

The creative world of Illya swept me up in the night (with similarities to the stories of The Hunger Games and Divergent). The main character, Paedyn Gray ‘an ordinary’, tricking ‘The Elites’ into thinking she was one of them as she is tossed into The Purging Trials to show off all of their powers.

She fights her way to the competitor’s and audience’s hearts as she showcases her ‘psychic talent’ when Kai Azer teams up with Pae; you could never expect what comes next… Kitt, the Crown Prince, and Kai’s half-brother, also becomes enamored with her. Reckless, the second book, takes us on a complicated journey, to which the cliffhanger ending has all of us on our toes.

Fearless, the finale is due to come out next April and is what many of us readers hope will bring a fulfilling ending and conclusion to the series.

I was lucky enough to meet Lauren Roberts twice this year for her book tour in May for Powerful (a Powerless Novella) and then her Reckless tour in October. I got my books signed and sat in on an event to showcase the book to give us some hints at what’s to come. She was a down-to-earth, grateful, and passionate author who has become a sensation to readers across the US and UK in the last year or so.

Roberts started off filming TikTok’s about her journey as an author when the series first began. It has become a major platform on BookTok, and if you haven’t read it yet, you need to get your hands on it! She will hopefully be doing another event when Fearless comes out, so you still have time to catch up on the series for a winter read and become as obsessed with the story as I have.

What started off as a harmless purchase became an overnight passion. It’s one of my favorite books, and as much as I hope the story never ends, I am anxious to read how Roberts finishes it, and hopefully, in the next year or so, we will even be able to watch it on our screens as a TV series is in the works, and Lauren is a big part of it, hoping to keep the story and its cast as true to the books as possible!
