A Book Review Of “Grimstone” By Sophie Lark

Sophie Lark has created what I consider the perfect gloomy weather read. As we slowly exit fall and descend into winter, “Grimstone” is the perfect choice. When it comes to wintertime, there is nothing I love more than being inside, cozy by the fire and immersing myself in a new world. “Grimstone” is a moody and gothic romance with a touch of thrilling aspects that leave you on the edge of your seat as you read.

Remi Hayes has just purchased a new home with her younger brother. This is not just any home though the estate they have purchased is known as Blackleaf Manor and has quite a history. Along with their new property, Remi discovers her neighbor, Dane Covett, is not so friendly and has a terrifying reputation in the town, as everyone believes he murdered his wife. However, her interpretation of Dane shifts when he helps stitch her leg up after an accident. On top of the townspeople sharing rumors and Dane stealing her every thought, ghostly occurings begin in Remi’s new home. What could be happening in Blackleaf Manor? Is Dane Covett as dangerous as everyone says he is? Are the townspeople just a bunch of gossip who do not know the whole story? All these answers come to light beautifully.

The descriptive writing from Lark has never been more intriguing. I found myself anxious to flip each page, eager to see what waited for me as I continued the story. Remi and Dane were fun characters who I would have loved to see fleshed out just a little more. Remi holds so much spunk and fire with everything she does. It would have been exciting to see her interact a little more with some of the other characters. Remi’s brother, Jude, was another character that I felt sadly flew under the radar too much. There were times when I would read, and he would show up randomly, and I would forget he was a part of the story. Aside from that, I found this book to be gripping, with tense emotions and twisting surprises. “Grimstone” perfectly captures the idea that not everything is as it seems.

The mix of romance and mystery is perfectly blended. There is no point where you feel like one is lacking compared to the other. If you are looking for your next slightly spooky, dark, and beautiful read, “Grimstone” is the book for you. This story will sweep you away and take you on an adventure like never before.
