Devney Perry takes us into a cozy and mysterious world with her novel, “Indigo Ridge.” This story follows Winslow Covington, the new chief of police, in Quincy, Montana. Things are not starting easily for Winslow when she realizes that the town only sees her as an outsider who got her position due to her grandfather being the town mayor. Winslow’s first night in Quincy consists of a hot one-night stand with the striking and confident Griffin. However, their hopeful one-night stand ends differently than expected when she finds out that Griffin is a member of the Eden family, who founded Quincy. After their steamy night together, reality hits when a young woman is found dead on Griffin’s property. We learn that this tragedy is nothing new for the small town. Over the past decade, there have been seven suicides. Winslow believes there is more to the story, and these suicides may be murders instead. While her new relationship blooms with Griffin, Winslow must prove herself to the town and solve this mystery. Are these tragic suicides that have claimed the lives of their residents? Or is there more to these untimely deaths than meets the eye?
While the characters in “Indigo Ridge” feel relatable. Some aspects felt lacking. Winslow and Griffin feel like such deep characters who could show different sides of themselves. However, their development felt incomplete with the length of the book. We see Griffin as this man with a reputation for being a playboy. His inner monologue reveals that he doesn’t want any committed relationship; however, there is never a huge reason why. It would have been interesting to see this side of his personality and learn about what kept him from opening up for so long. Winslow has her reservations about entering a relationship. We briefly learn about her past relationship as well as the loss of her parents. The book moves faster than it should have in certain parts. With that said, I felt the mystery aspect of the book moved at the perfect pace. It kept me intrigued throughout the book, and I never felt I was missing any information. The different red herrings and suspects throughout the book are well done. The ending left me surprised and with a twist I never saw coming.
“Indigo Ridge” is perfect if you are looking for a mixture of mystery and romance. The balance between these two genres feels natural. While I would have loved to see more of Griffin and Winslow lean into their enemies-to-lovers trope, it was still exciting to watch their romance blossom. The way they open up to each other and learn to trust again is inspiring. The atmosphere in this story leaves a cozy and inviting feeling while reading. The small town of Quincy leaves a lasting impact throughout the entire book. If you are looking for that thrilling and captivating read, look no further. “Indigo Ridge” will hit all those marks and leave you wanting more.
