It was two nights before Thanksgiving, and Maya and her brother, twin Charlie, were driving to their grandparents’ house to spend Thanksgiving with them. However, what they weren’t expecting was for it to start snowing when they had almost an hour left in their drive. The snow was getting heavier, and before they knew it, they would have to find a hotel for the night. As Charlie drove, Maya read her old copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, grateful not to be behind the wheel this time. Charlie rarely let Maya drive the car that they shared, especially not in the wintertime, because she wasn’t always the best driver. Suddenly, the car stopped, and they found themselves stuck on the side of the road. Maya asked Charlie what he thought might be wrong. After he turned on the car’s hazard lights, he got out to check the tires. After checking the tires, he informed her that they had unfortunately had a flat tire, so they would need to call AAA for assistance.
After calling AAA, Charlie and Maya flipped through the radio stations until they found something they both agreed on. Like most siblings, their tastes in music were a bit different, but once they came across a station playing only Christmas music, the two of them were put at ease a little. As the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald singing “Sleigh Ride” filled the car, the two of them hoped they would find somewhere warm to stay for the night since they both knew they most likely wouldn’t be making it to their grandparents’ house that night. After waiting for a while, a tow truck finally arrived, and a tall, fat guy named Rusty walked up to Charlie’s car door. So, Charlie rolled down the window, and the guy told him that the car had a flat tire. They probably meant that they were going to have to have their car towed and that it was going to have to get fixed the next day.
After Rusty towed their car to a nearby mechanic’s garage, Charlie and Maya walked to the hotel that was right next to it. Luckily, they were both able to get a room to stay in for the night because both of them were exhausted after a long day of traveling. Tomorrow, Maya was hoping that the tire would get replaced so that the two of them could make it to their grandparents’ house for Thanksgiving. Before heading to bed, they both brushed their teeth, got into their pajamas, and turned on the Weather Channel to see what the forecast for the rest of the week was. They were lucky because it wasn’t supposed to snow for the rest of the week, so at least they would be able to make it to Thanksgiving dinner on time.
When Maya and Charlie woke up the next day, they were relieved to see that the roads had been plowed and that it had finally stopped snowing. There was at least six inches of snow on the ground from the abrupt snowstorm the night before, but at least it wasn’t supposed to snow anymore. Both of them were really looking forward to seeing their family for Thanksgiving because they hadn’t seen their grandparents in about a year since their parents got a divorce, so it was going to be nice to see them again. One of the things Maya loved the most about Thanksgiving, other than seeing her family, was that her Grandma Ruth always baked the best pumpkin pie every year, and the Thanksgiving she always served was always delicious. Not only were Maya and Charlie looking forward to seeing their grandparents, but they were also looking forward to seeing their dad, aunts, uncles, and all of their favorite cousins. Maya’s favorite cousin was Sophia, who was only nine years old, but whenever Maya saw her, she always taught her how to do something new. Last year, Sophia taught Maya how to watercolor paint, and the two of them ended up painting a picture of the autumn trees in the backyard of their grandparents’ house. The painting perfectly captured the beauty of the red, orange, and yellow leaves on the trees, and Grandma Ruth had it framed to hang on her wall.
After picking up the car from the mechanic, Maya and Charlie drove to their grandparents’ house, and when they got inside, they were welcomed at the door by Grandma Ruth, who was wearing a bright red and green plaid apron with flour all over it. Both Maya and Charlie were relieved that they had finally arrived at her house because they were both tired of being in the car. Grandpa Bill was sitting in front of the television watching the Thanksgiving football, and when he saw that they were finally there, he got up and gave them both a big hug. While Grandma Ruth was still making dinner for everyone, she asked everyone to get a few quick pictures together. But it was difficult to get all of their younger cousins to cooperate for a picture together, especially because they all knew that they were going to be eating dinner soon.
Grandma Ruth finally finished their Thanksgiving feast, which consisted of roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, cranberries, rolls, and, of course, Maya’s favorite pumpkin pie for dessert. Everything on the table smelled and looked delicious, and everyone couldn’t wait to eat. “Dig in, everyone,” said Grandma Ruth. Then everyone began eating, and Maya and Charlie both expressed their gratitude for being together to celebrate Thanksgiving.
After the Thanksgiving feast, it was time to head out to the backyard for the family’s annual Thanksgiving football game. Everyone was divided evenly into teams, with the boys versus the girls, and Maya knew the girls probably wouldn’t win, just like every year in the past. As Maya’s cousin, Roger, threw the ball to Charlie, she realized they were about to score. Her younger cousin, Gina, ran towards him and tackled him in an attempt to tickle him. Luckily, she succeeded, and the girls scored their first few points shortly after. Before they all knew it, the game was tied, and they all had to try to break the tie somehow. And by some miracle, the girls scored a touchdown, and they won the game for the first time in their family’s history. Maya said, “This is the greatest Thanksgiving ever.” After the game finished, the family went inside to eat some pumpkin pie and vanilla ice cream.
