Despite the Zwane family’s dire circumstances, the household head seemed oblivious to his family’s struggles. While his wife worked tirelessly to provide for their five children, he spent most of his time at the local shebeen, leaving her to bear the burden alone.
Like her husband, the mother was unemployed. She rose before dawn each day to sell tea and fat cakes to early morning commuters at the train station. Her business thrived, thanks to loyal customers who appreciated her delicious offerings.
The meager income she earned was enough to feed her family, clothe them, and even send the children to school. Though Mr. Zwane showed little interest in his family’s well-being, he was content to reap the benefits of his wife’s hard work. Despite his wife and children’s efforts to encourage him to change his ways, he remained apathetic.
Undeterred, the mother persevered, driven by her determination to provide for her family. She worked twice as hard, overcoming the challenges that came her way. Her resilience was a testament to her unwavering spirit, and she emerged victorious, ensuring her family’s basic needs were met despite her husband’s neglect.
