Married To A Chameleon

Jabu and I were the best couple in school.  Everybody envied our relationship. We were best friends and best companions. It went on for years until he asked for my hand in marriage.

I was delighted to marry my high school sweetheart and the person I know so well. My family agreed, and our special day was radiant and breathtaking, and he was so handsome.

Later, after our wedding, I fell pregnant, and we were blessed with twins. Unfortunately, Jabu’s parents died in a horrific car accident just after.

Ever since, he has not been the same man I fell in love with and married. He started abusing alcohol and coming home late at night. I tried to talk to him about his behavior, but he became physically abusive to me, too.

He came home late and started a fight with me, over nothing sometimes.  He was forever brutal and violent.  The twins didn’t know his love or care. They grew up scared of and disliking him.

They saw his bad behavior and how our home became cold during his presence. He was never happy, and he disliked seeing us happy.  The twins became my warm space. I experienced joy around them, and they too with me.

On a silly night, my husband came home drunk and refused to have the supper I had cooked and wanted me to cook his alternative. I told him I would cook his choice the next day, but he became too furious and shouted at me.

I tried to apologize, but he lost it and pushed me violently against the wall. I screamed for help. The twins were seven years old already, and they called the police secretly.

After five minutes, we heard the banging knock on the door. It was late already, I thought. The twins came running and quickly opened without asking who it was. They were expecting a police rescue for their mother, and it’s what they got.

They hurried in and found the wife squashed down on the floor, crying and bleeding. They grabbed the husband and threw him at the back of the van. The twins held on to their mother and whispered, “It’s finally over”. We did it! They exclaimed. Our home will be peaceful. The mother was surprised at their thoughtfulness.
