A Slow Dance With Daddy

The first step, claps of joy

Turning one, there’s a celebration

Training wheels come off

Band-Aids cover scrapes

Daddy wipes tears away

Stuffed animals decorate her room

Bows and flowers stitched perfectly into her dress

Mommy’s lipstick spread over her lips

Makeup brushes sprawled on the bathroom floor

Twirls done in the mirror

Daddy, I’m your princess

Her smile fills him with love

My sweet princess, you are

Come dance with me, Daddy

He picks her up

She lays her head on his shoulder

Daddy, I love you

He hugs her and says it back

Then asks

Do me a favor, little one

Please

Don’t grow up too fast
