When You Hear

When you hear that I have gone,

Don’t look for me too far away,

For I’m nearer to you than before.

Look for me in the laughter of the children.

Look for me in the bleating,

Of the grazing sheep at pasture.

Oh, don’t look too far away;

I’m nearer to you than yesterday!

Look for me in the songs of the nightingale.

Listen to the wail of the violin;

You will find me there.

Dissect the evening ballads of the storytellers,

In their midst, you will find me there.

I’m the whisper in the easy, gentle breeze.

I’m the eerie shrills of the midnight crickets.

Visit the nearby river;

Listen to its raspy voice,

And you will hear me singing goodbye;

Not forever, but for a little while,

Cause I know we will meet again someday.
