Gothikana By: RuNyx

RuNyx takes us into a dark and mysterious world with the gothic romance, “Gothikana.” This story follows Corvina Clemm, who has been deemed an outcast her whole life. When Corvina arrives at the University of Verenmore, there are many mysteries she finds herself caught up in. Why are there so many secrets and tragedies that take place at Verenmore? Corvina is determined to find out. These events lead her to Vad Deverell, a broody and handsome teacher at Verenmore. Corvina doesn’t realize how connected Vad is to this school and the events that take place. The unexpected happens when Corvina and Vad find themselves romantically involved. Can Corvina trust Vad, or is he more dangerous than she knows? As secrets unravel and allies become enemies, Corvina must stop whatever curse has its hold on Verenmore. During this, Corvina also struggles with her own issues surrounding her family and how she was raised.

The characters in “Gothikana” are well-rounded and relatable. Corvina is someone many people could see themselves in. The idea of being different and outcasted for it is not a far-out there theory. It is comforting to read about someone taking their fear of being different and using it to further themselves in the world. Vad also has an interesting character development throughout the book. The fear he holds onto has not allowed him to trust or fall in love until Corvina arrives. The story paints a beautiful picture as you read it. It feels like you are at Verenmore with Corvina, as RuNyx describes the world she has created. Macabre is a notable theme in “Gothikana”. It is referenced throughout the book multiple times and alludes to the fate Corvina’s life may hold if she does not break the curse. The gloomy and dark aspects make death feel like a character while reading. Finding love in the most unlikely place is another theme in “Gothikana.” The relationship between Corvina and Vad is unique while reading. There are times when it feels like they trust each other fully and times when you question if they will last. That seems to be the beauty of how obsessive and intense their love is. The dark elements of their love story add to this unsettling feeling while you read.

“Gothikana” does include some fantasy elements. If you are new to fantasy, this story is a great way to introduce you to the genre. “Gothikana” is a quick and entertaining read. The atmosphere in the story leaves an eerie and dark feeling due to its fantasy and paranormal elements. Seeing Corvina grow throughout the book and how she becomes more confident in herself is inspiring. When Corvina arrives at Verenmore, she makes a small group of friends who love her for who she is. Vad also becomes a support system for her and reminds her to be the girl she is destined to be, not who society deems appropriate. If you love dark academia or anything spooky, “Gothikana” is for you. While “Gothikana” is a standalone book, RuNyx has stated that she will revisit the universe in the future.
