Poetry- Vacation

Do you see that girl by the side of the pool?

The one staring sadly at her phone?

The one who seems so lost, so alone?

You wouldn’t know she’s on a couple’s vacation

Sitting alone in this island location

She’s strung out and stressed – no relaxation

You wouldn’t know she’s staying in a villa booked for two.

Sitting alone under a sky of deep blue

You wouldn’t know she’s anxious, depressed, and so blue

Sitting alone under that sky of bright blue

As her sadness rings true.

Realizations have come true.

She’s totally alone on a holiday booked for two.

Three hours have passed, and still, this girl sits alone.

So, for company, she now just uses her phone.

Amongst all the other couples

The only one alone.

She’s a wilting flower fading, a forgotten stem

As she sits and enviously watches them

The sun lounger next to her sits empty and bare

She so desperately wants in his conversation to share.

Waiting sadly for her person that never comes.

Her heart beats alone, a desperate drum; it thrums.

Every so often, she looks up expectantly

Maybe it’s him, her partner, her love

But her hopes are dashed each and every time.

So, she sits on her phone, writing lines of sad rhymes.

As footsteps fade away

Facing another lonely day

On a holiday booked for two together

Sitting alone for what seems like forever

As her tears start to come, she jumps into the pool water

Her soul so sick; mermaid tail flick

As her ocean tears mix with cool pool water

You must remember she’s always Neptune’s daughter

Finally, he comes to the poolside so cold

He’s sullen, he’s moody, away from a laptop gleaming gold

Only then does she realize sitting alone with him in the sun

that instead of this holiday booked originally for two

She really should have booked a villa for one

Mermaid tears start to fall under the horizon’s dying sun
