The quiet labor of Anna’s hummingbird fascinates me,
a bird with a wash of ruby-pink at its throat,
and a heart smaller than a thumb.
Still brave enough to leave its nest each morning.
The hummingbird moves in search of flowers
through rows of trees, electric towers, lakes,
much larger than its two bronze-green wings
flickering in the wind.
And even after the sky brings rain
and the flowers close their mouths,
the hummingbird still trusts nectar
it has yet to find.
Perhaps hope is simply the search for sweetness
even when it seems almost impossible,
a wildflower tucked by the foot of a stump
could surprise us.
