My writing is a huge part of my life, so sometimes I can forget about what I call the little things, getting caught up in the latest story, article, or book that I’m working on at the time can consume my mind, leading to me only thinking about writing.
I don’t know how many other writers can relate to this, maybe none, maybe quite a few. But I want to give you an idea of what my head goes like when my writing mind is in control.
If I have appointments during the week that isn’t writing related, I can completely forget even when I have it in my calendar; this can also happen with writing groups if my mind is going ten to the dozen with writing ideas.
I can completely mishear dates and put in the wrong date for events, appointments, and meetings, all of which I end up having to move when text reminders come through.
I can double book myself because I don’t check my calendar properly, with my mind racing about what I was doing at that time.
I can forget simple things like the washing being on, mealtimes, and even what day it is sometimes.
You can laugh at these I did while writing it, but this is my mind for you all over the place, and I have no control over it.
I have even forgotten more important stuff like medication, which is very serious for me to forget since I’m epileptic.
I’ve seen days just disappear as I have sat at my laptop or been writing in my notebook, my little dog beside me reminding me when she needs feeding and a toilet break to the garden.
If my mind has multiple projects going on at once, like it does now, it’s like it’s thrown into overdrive, and the forgetfulness becomes more apparent; of course I don’t forget anything regarding the projects.
Mealtimes don’t exist; I drink plenty of coffee and plenty of water, but meals can be skipped without any issues at all; it’s like my body is in survival mode when I’m working, and it shuts off tummy rumbles.
Sleep is another thing my body thinks I can do without as my mind races with different things I need to do, and new ideas popping up like popping popcorn all the time; unfortunately for my body, this one I disagree on and so desperately need my sleep every night.
In closing, welcome to my life as a writer, my mind all over the place and a person who is sleep- and meal-deprived, yet I wouldn’t change it for a single thing.
