How My Writing Journey Started

My writing journey started about four years ago. My boyfriend and I, at the time, spent the weekends going off in his caravan. I needed something to do that I could easily pick up and put down, and wouldn’t take up too much room in such a small space. I remembered I’d dabbled in writing on and off all my life and hadn’t done any for a while, so that was what I decided to do. All I needed was a pen and paper, my imagination, and I was away. I had forgotten how much I really enjoyed writing, and it wasn’t long before I fell in love with it again.

Sadly, the relationship didn’t last, but my writing adventure had only just begun. On a visit to the local library, I found a poster advertising a writing group that meets regularly in my local town of Exeter in Devon. I also found out about an online writing group called the Write Tribe, a very talented and friendly group of women scattered across the country. I have been part of these groups ever since. They are all amazing people, and I have learned so much from them.

During my writing journey, I have found that inspiration can come from anywhere. It could be a person you see out and about.

What does that person look like?

What is that person wearing?

This sounds wrong and weird, but discreetly eavesdropping on conversations can spark an idea. What did that person say that grabbed your attention? You would be amazed at what you could hear if you take yourself to your local cafe and just listen to what is being said around you, whilst you have a coffee and a piece of cake. Bearing in mind some of it you may wish you hadn’t heard, but it could still be interesting.

Inspiration can also hit at any time for me. The most common time is at night when I’m just about to go to bed, which can be annoying. Writing has given me many sleepless nights, not being able to switch off at times, and then I have to immediately get it written down, otherwise I would forget it, so a huge tip is to always have a notebook handy.

I would recommend to anyone who really enjoys writing, or thinks he or she hasn’t got time, to just get some paper, pick up a pen, and write. Even if it’s a short poem or journal entry that gets your thoughts down on paper. Just give it a try and see how amazing it can be. I have no idea where this journey is going to take me, but I write, most importantly, for the love of writing, alongside a lifelong, deep-down desire to one day be published, and am very excited to see what happens.
