Life gets heavy, fast. Too many decisions and responsibilities. Should I take this new job? Try this new recipe. Start my own business. Allow my child to change schools. We have so many decisions to make. Our brains get overloaded. We become overwhelmed. Maybe even reactive and grouchy. With strangers, people around us.
So what do we do when we are overstimulated? That is constructive and beneficial. I think we have all done destructive behaviors. Overeating, overspending, brain-rotting type behaviors that get us nowhere.
Stop what you are doing. That is the answer. You can’t think properly if your brain is focused on twenty things. That project deadline that isn’t completed. Remembering the school snacks. Trying to remember to feed the plants and the dog. Sit in total silence. Shut off everything. Lie down for a minute. Just breathe for a second. No worries or expectations. Your thoughts shift. Become less stressed, and you can begin thinking clearly.
If possible, sit in nature. Listen to the beach waves. Hear the birds chirp. Don’t bring your phone.
Give yourself and your brain the time it needs. It’s constantly making decisions. Sometimes it needs to shut off. Allowing your creativity to flow.
Ask yourself these questions.
Who am I doing this for?
What happens if I don’t decide today?
What’s the worst that happens if I fail?
Are these expectations reasonable?
Sometimes we set impossible goals for ourselves that aren’t realistic. We think they are.
Superwoman couldn’t even perform these tasks!
Next time you get overwhelmed, just remember to recharge your batteries. You recharge your phone. What about recharging yourself?
